Heart to Table: Chocolate Cheerios Clusters
This August, our Thrifty Tips for Trying Times theme is "Faithful with a Little" — a reminder drawn from the feeding of the 5,000, when Jesus told His disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted" (John 6:12). It's a striking picture of divine mindfulness: nothing is too small or too ordinary for God to use.
At Crossfire Ministries, we believe food is more than a list of ingredients. Food can offer comfort. It can help stretch a household budget. It can bring people back to the table. And a recipe built from a few humble pantry staples can become a small act of stability for a family in a tight season.
This month's Heart to Table recipe, Chocolate Cheerios Clusters, turns simple, affordable ingredients into a quick, no-bake treat worth sharing.
The Heart Behind It
A box of cereal, a bag of chocolate chips, a couple tablespoons of butter — on their own, unremarkable. Gathered together with a little care, they become twelve servings of something worth sharing. That's the same principle behind the boy's simple lunch in John 6: what we have, offered up in faith, can multiply in ways we never imagined.
This is part of the heart behind Crossfire's no-cost grocery store. Guests are welcomed into a grocery environment where they can choose the food their families need most. That dignity of choice matters because every household knows its own table best — and because worth was never something to be earned or rationed in the first place.
From heart to table, simple food can become an offering of care.
A Devotional Thought
"Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted." — John 6:12
When Jesus fed the 5,000, He didn't just provide in abundance from very little — He paid attention to the leftovers. It's easy to picture the miracle and skip past the instruction that followed it: gather what remains, and let nothing be wasted.
Maybe this is a season where your resources feel stretched. Or maybe you're holding something — time, kindness, an overlooked skill — that feels too small to matter. The God who multiplies loaves and fishes is still at work. This month, may we see abundance in unexpected places, trusting that even the fragments can feed someone's hunger, physical or spiritual.
A simple cluster of cereal and melted chocolate won't feed 5,000. But it can still be an act of gathering what's on hand and offering it well.
—RECIPE—
Chocolate Cheerios Clusters
PREP TIME: 10 minutes
COOK TIME: 5 minutes
SERVINGS: 12 servings
INGREDIENTS:
3 cups Cheerios-like cereal
1 cup chocolate chips
2 tablespoons butter
⅛ teaspoon salt
OPTIONAL ADD-INS:
½ cup mini marshmallows
½ cup chopped nuts
½ cup dried fruit
Replace butter with 2 tablespoons peanut butter
INSTRUCTIONS:
Melt chocolate and butter in microwave-safe bowl, heating 20-30 seconds at a time until smooth.
Add cheerios and any optional add-ins and mix gently until coated.
Scoop small spoonfuls onto a parchment lined baking sheet.
Let them set at room temperature or refrigerate 10-15 minutes until firm.
Store in an air-tight container for 1 week.
Enjoy as a quick snack or sweet treat.
A Simple Kitchen Note:
This recipe comes together in about 15 minutes with almost no cleanup, which makes it an easy one to keep in rotation for busy weeks. Because the clusters store in an airtight container for a full week, a single batch can cover several days of lunchbox treats or after-school snacks without extra prep.
The optional add-ins also make it flexible — swap in whatever's on hand (marshmallows, nuts, dried fruit, or peanut butter in place of the butter) so nothing in the pantry goes to waste.
From Heart to Table
At Crossfire, we know many families are doing careful math every week. Groceries, rent, utilities, gas, school supplies, and medical bills can all press at the same time.
That is why no-cost groceries, clothing, and care matter.
Every shopping visit is meant to offer more than food. It is meant to offer hospitality, dignity, and practical compassion. Guests choose what their households need, and those choices help bring food from heart to table.
If you or someone you know could use support, Crossfire Ministries welcomes guests with care and dignity.
If you would like to help, your generosity helps provide no-cost groceries, clothing, and care for neighbors in tight places.
