A Bowl of Comfort

Easy Apple Crisp for the Family Table

Some recipes stay with us because they are dependable. Apple crisp is one of those recipes.

It uses simple ingredients that most families already have in their kitchens. It stretches fresh fruit into a warm dessert that can feed a table. And it reminds us that good food doesn’t need to be complicated.

At Crossfire, many of the recipes we share through our education programs are built around that same principle: simple food, made well, using what you already have.

Cooking at home is one of the most practical ways families stretch their resources while still enjoying meals together.

This apple crisp recipe is a perfect example. It’s flexible, forgiving, and easy to adapt depending on what apples or toppings you have available.

Serve it warm with yogurt, whipped cream, or ice cream—or enjoy it just as it is.

A Devotional Reflection

Enough for Today

There is something honest about simple food. Apples. Oats. Butter. Sugar. Nothing fancy. Nothing complicated. Just ingredients that come together to make something warm and good.

Many of the meals that sustain us are like this. They are not elaborate. They are faithful.

Scripture reminds us that God often works the same way. In the wilderness, when the people of Israel worried about how they would survive, God gave them manna—bread that appeared each morning. It was not meant to be stored for months. It was meant to be gathered day by day. Enough for today.

“Give us this day our daily bread.”
— Matthew 6:11

This prayer teaches us something about the heart of God. He is not distant from the daily needs of our lives. He cares about bread on the table, about meals shared with family, and about the quiet dignity of providing for those we love.

Sometimes provision comes in large and dramatic ways. But often it looks more like this:

  • a simple recipe

  • a shared meal

  • ingredients already in the cupboard

  • neighbors helping neighbors

Small things. Faithful things.

And when we pause long enough to notice, we realize they are not small at all. They are reminders that God continues to provide—sometimes in quiet ways that arrive right on time.

Today, may your table be a place of gratitude. And may you be reminded that the God who provided manna in the wilderness still provides what we need, one day at a time.
