Zesty Cabbage Apple Slaw

Spring has a way of reminding us that fresh starts don’t have to be complicated.

They often begin with what’s already growing, already available, already within reach.

In many kitchens, May is a transition month. Heavier winter meals begin to give way to lighter dishes. Budgets are still being watched carefully. Families are still making intentional choices about how to stretch what they have.

This is where simple recipes shine.

Meals that are fresh.
Meals that are flexible.
Meals that bring people together without adding pressure.

This Cabbage Apple Slaw is one of those meals.

It’s crisp, colorful, and built from ingredients that are affordable, accessible, and often already on hand. But more than that, it reflects something deeper—how thoughtful preparation and shared meals can create connection in even the simplest moments.

A Thought to Take With You

A good dish doesn’t have to be expensive.

It just has to be shared.

When you prepare something simple like this, you’re doing more than making food.

You’re creating space.

For connection.

For care.

For someone to feel seen and welcomed at the table.

The Heart Behind It

At Crossfire Ministries, we believe food is never just food. A meal can be a reminder of God’s care, a practical expression of love, and a way to bring people together with dignity.

Through our no-cost grocery store, families can choose the food that fits their needs and prepare meals that nourish both body and spirit.

Recipes like this one are simple, but they point to something lasting: God often uses ordinary things to provide for His people. A shared meal, a prepared table, a thoughtful offering—these small acts can carry real hope.

From heart to table, we remember that provision is one of the ways God makes His love known.

A Devotional Thought

Sharing What Is Already Enough

In many of the stories we read in Scripture, provision doesn’t come from abundance first. It comes from offering.

A widow shares her oil. A boy shares his lunch. A table is set with what’s available—not what’s ideal.

And each time, God meets that offering with multiplication.

This is the heart of thrifty living. It’s not about limitation. It’s about trust.

Trust that what we have can still serve a purpose. Trust that a simple meal can still bring people together. Trust that generosity doesn’t begin when we have more—it begins when we’re willing to share.

At Crossfire Ministries, we see this every day.

Guests—our neighbors—shop with dignity and choice. Volunteers serve with care and intention. Donations are stewarded thoughtfully so they can nourish both body and spirit.

And in the middle of it all, dishes like this one become something more than food.

They become connection.
They become hospitality.
They become a reminder that no one has to walk through a tight season alone.
